Girdles increase the torsional rigidity of the cylinder block and evenly distributes load and dampens harmonics by bolting the main cap studs together. The increased rigidity and strength of these girdles on the bottom end allows extra stress to be placed on these motors. Highly modified vehicles using Nitrous Oxide, Turbochargers or Superchargers can aid from these girdles as the increased stress on the cylinder block is reduced. Future products: BMW focuses on small crossovers, new EV subbrand
Tue, 31 Aug 2010BMW will concentrate on small crossovers next year with a redesigned X3 and the all-new X1. Both are based on the redesigned 3-series sedan, which will arrive in 2012. In 2013, a new subbrand of electric and hybrid vehicles being developed by BMW's Project i group will debut.
Ford B-Max
Wed, 01 Feb 2012A production version of the Ford B-Max mini-MPV will make its debut at next month's Geneva motor show – one year after the concept was announced. The production B-Max stays true to the 2011 concept, with the same lack of a B-pillar between the conventional front and sliding rear doors, which creates a 1,500mm aperture. We'll be interested to learn how this affects both weight and rigidity as well as how much real-world advantage it offers.

There are probably less than 500 cases a year of Legionnaires’ Disease in the UK, but new research points to a likely cause for an unpleasant infection for which the source of infection often goes undiscovered. The Health Protection Agency has been checking out findings that professional drivers were the group mostly at risk – five times more likely to contract Legionnaires’ disease – and have been looking at why.
